Face Reading

July 18, 2009

I am currently reading a book on mien shiang, the Taoist art or science of face reading. I’m a fairly fast reader – actually I’m rereading it. I hope I will be able to “read” faces soon (I find it amusing that most of what I “read” on my face is correct).

I took the book’s Five Element Personality Quiz and I want to share the results. A different test is also available online at http://longevity-center.com/five-element-personality-questionnaire/.

  1. My movements are focused, fast and direct.
  2. I could be most described as a flowing stream.
  3. In an emergency situation such as an accident, if I am in a group, my role is most likely to step back and assess the situation, especially the safety issues (I won’t save anyone unless it’s reasonably safe for me to do so – not a hero!)
  4. I have a weekday doctor’s appointment and have a full schedule at school; the doctor is late. I wait a reasonable amount of time, then if I must leave, make another appointment.
  5. My ideal first date would be anything fun with lots of talking and laughing.
  6. My sweetie and I are celebrating our first year together. I’d love to go anywhere where we can sleep late, meander all over town all day and night, taking our time and just seeing what happens.
  7. I am going to a conference where loved ones are welcome. I would rather go alone and concentrate on my work.
  8. I’m on my way to spend some time at my favorite place when I get stuck in a traffic jam, without my cell phone (which is usually the case). I am most likely to use the downtime to think happy thoughts.
  9. When my loved one is away for some reason, I am fine – I miss my loved one, but I don’t need to express it; besides, I don’t want to distract him/her.
  10. Giving a party is a lot of work!
  11. If my friend betrays me, I am most likely to retreat, intellectualize, and then try to seek true justice and fairness for the both of us.
  12. If I were water, I would be described as raging, rushing rapids.
  13. If I were a tree, I would be described as a redwood.
  14. If I were fire, I would be contained.
  15. If I were made of earth, I would be described as a mountain.
  16. I am attending a class where my group will have to role-play assigned scenarios. I would rather help plan or direct rather than perform.
  17. When someone looks in the eye, I think they are responding to my, umm… sparkling eyes?
  18. When my friend is in an emotional crisis and asks me for good advice, I first help my friend find truth in the problem and then suggest how s/he might find a just solution.
  19. I wish I had more control of my fears.
  20. I do my job best when I love what I am doing.

According to the personality quiz, I am predominantly of the Water element. People of the Water element are…

  • Mysterious (not really)
  • Wise (I like to think of myself that way, though I know that that is far from reality)
  • Defenders of truth (well… yeah!)
  • Academic/intellectual (well… yeah again!)
  • Argumentative (that’s why I get into a lot of trouble at home)
  • Determined (I find ways, most of the time. I don’t give up easily)
  • Contemplative (this one got me right… I do like to daydreaming)
  • Persuasive (if I rarely try to persuade it’s because I hate it when my attempts at persuasion fail)
  • Imaginative (really? I don’t think so)
  • Cautious (but not necessarily rational)
  • Restless (I quickly tire of rest)
  • Sensual (wahaha! This one’s definitely WRONG!)

I am of the Water element because my defining emotion is FEAR. Everything I do defined by fear: I fear displeasing my friends, I fear of being rejected by my colleagues, I fear my parents would disown me (and take away my share in our 500 sq. meter urban estate… just kidding!), I fear of losing a job because of my sexuality… Just like water (I remember a friend advising people to “be like water”), I tremble at the slightest touch, retreating when I find a hole or gap, freezing when cold, evaporating when hot. But like a flowing river, I’ll cut mountains to reach the oceans.

Key concerns of Water-types are:

  • Fear
  • Determination
  • Safety
  • Loyalty (I make only a few friends, but I try my best to maintain them; I am always watching if they are deserving of my loyalty)
  • Restlessness
  • Time & patience
  • Trust and reassurance (I easily become disappointed with myself when someone I regard highly tells me something negative)
  • Security
  • Decisiveness
  • Knowledge and truth
  • Courage
  • Commitments

I am at my best at all times, except during crises. I am the type of person who must be pulled from a sinking boat – I can’t decide for myself what to do. I fear of making a wrong decision out of haste, but I also fear of not making a decision at all (which, in the context of a sinking boat, would mean my pathetic death).

More about what I “read” on my face on Monday!

To VZ and friends: I am taking your social networking pictures and try giving them a reading. I hope you won’t mind. I’m going to give this “art” a test (and what an interesting test it will be!)

My STS classmates laughed when I told them that face reading is part of traditional Chinese medicine and is used as a diagnostic tool to find out what are your weak points or health condition. Apparently they don’t think that it is possible or they consider it unscientific.
